Kamfers Dam, a large wetland near Kimberley is one of only four places in Africa where the spectacular Lesser Flamingo breeds. But a major environmental disaster is unfolding there.
Untreated sewage from a broken sewage works is flooding into Kamfers Dam! Developers also want to build around the dam which will increase the negative impact on the water as well as the flamingos and other wildlife that depend on the dam. Urgent action is needed to prevent the dam from becoming a polluted cesspool devoid of birdlife, and hazardous to humans. Save the Flamingo (a non-profit organisation) says they have the solutions to the problems facing Kamfers Dam, but they need support to help persuade the local authorities to take the threats facing this precious waterbody seriously. |
